Dagupenos to join observance of Earth Hour on March 27
DAGUPAN
CITY, March 7 (PNA)--Some 200,000 Dagupenos will turn off their lights
from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 27 to join a billion people across the
globe in the observance of the 2010 Earth Hour.
Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. will lead the city in observing
Earth Hour in support of the worldwide call for action against climate
change that is now affecting peoples around the world.
“After we bore the brunt of destructive typhoons in 2009, I
believe everyone now knows that climate change is real and it’s
happening right before our eyes," Fernandez said.
Calling on all Dagupenos to support the activity, the mayor
said climate change is now impacting on water resources, power,
agriculture and health, putting the livelihoods and economic future of
the people in every part of the world at risk.
Calling on all Dagupenos to join the observance of Earth
Hour, Fernandez said shutting off light for one hour means a lot as it
will give a strong message that Dagupan City folk are as much concerned
about climate change.
The mayor also said people can help save energy by making
some changes in their lifestyles: planting more trees, having occasional
candlelight dinners and maintaining their vehicles so these will not
emit too much smoke.
He said the Earth Hour is not just about switching off
lights but also changing people's attitude toward their environment.
